HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC IDAH

The Federal Polytechnic, Idah was established by the Obasanjo administration in 1977 as Idah College of Technology along with three others as an aggressive attempt by the then Military Administration to provide solutions to the problems of middle level manpower in the country. This establishment was backed up by Decree No. 33 of 25th July, 1979. The College, as it was then known, took off officially on the 7th November, 1977 with a student population of one hundred and eighty distributed among two schools namely: 1. The School of Engineering Technology and 2. The School of Business Studies. The School of Engineering Technology comprised four departments of Civil Engineering Technology, Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Technology. The School of Business Studies commenced with one department of Secretarial Studies. Facilities for the take-off of the various programmes in these departments were adequate. The pioneer Rector (then called Principal) Engr. (Dr.) S. E. Chukwujekwu (Late) served between 1977 and 1984. He was followed by late Jacobson (1984 - 1985), then Alhaji M. A. Danzaki (1985 - 1992) and Dr. Y. W. Awodi (1992 - 2000). The pioneer Rector with the pioneer Registrar, Mr. Nduka I. Eya worked assiduously to prepare grounds for the proper take-off of the Polytechnic in 1977.
